SOLAS VI/2 (VGM) Verified gross mass of packed containers

Since 2016 the shipper must provide the verified gross mass of every packed export container before it is loaded on a ship – by weighing it (method 1) or by summing the weights of contents, packing and tare (method 2).

What it covers

  • Responsibility of the shipper named on the bill of lading.
  • Two methods; method 2 may require a certified or approved procedure depending on the country.

Key points for fabricators

  • A container without VGM must not be loaded.
  • The VGM must not exceed the maximum gross mass on the CSC plate.

How PEB Studio supports it

The Container Packing Report records the VGM (method 2 suggested from the packing data) and refuses a value above the maximum gross mass; the VGM signatory remains responsible for the figure.

This page is a summary for orientation. Always work from the edition of the standard named in the project specification.
