B.6 Weld detection from 3D geometry

The IFC contains no welds – the system derives weld locations, types and lengths from the contact between parts. Weld quantities are available immediately for estimating welding consumables and labour hours and for planning the welding shop.

What it does

4 weld types, each in its own colour: double-sided fillet weld (T-joint), all-round fillet weld at member ends, complete joint penetration butt weld, all-round lap weld on plates.
Weld length is assigned to the secondary part; totals by type and by assembly; a “welded part – welded to part” table.
Results verified against hand calculations on the sample file (e.g. UB406 end plate = 1,508.6 mm, exactly the section perimeter).

Limits and points to check

The IFC does not include weld sizes (leg length, edge preparation) – take them from the fabrication drawings, and check against the Tekla weld report before calculating welding consumables.
