EN 1090-2 Execution of steel structures – Technical requirements

The European standard for fabricating and erecting steel structures: execution classes EXC1–EXC4, traceability, welding, bolting, tolerances, inspection and documentation.

CodeEN 1090-2Issued byCEN (European Committee for Standardization)FieldFabrication & erection

What it covers

  • Requirements for constituent products, preparation (cutting, holing, forming), welding, mechanical fastening, erection, surface treatment and geometrical tolerances.
  • Four execution classes (EXC1 to EXC4); the class is chosen by the designer and stated in the execution specification.
  • Inspection, testing and correction, and the documentation the manufacturer must keep.

Key points for fabricators

  • Higher classes require full traceability of materials, a qualified welding coordinator, qualified WPS and welders and a higher extent of NDT.
  • EXC2 and above call for a quality plan; EXC3 and EXC4 call for ISO 3834-2 comprehensive welding quality requirements.
  • Used together with EN 1090-1, which covers CE marking of structural components in the EU.

How PEB Studio supports it

Production stages with QC hold points, inspection to the selected standard, WPS and welder authorisation, and an append-only traceability log give you the records EN 1090-2 asks for – from incoming material to the component quality history.

This page is a summary for orientation. Always work from the edition of the standard named in the project specification.
