ISO 6346 Freight containers – Coding, identification and marking

Defines the container number (owner code, category, serial number and check digit) and the size-type code such as 22G1 or 45G1.

What it covers

Owner code (3 letters) + equipment category (U for freight containers) + 6-digit serial + 1 check digit.
Size and type codes and operational markings.

The check digit is calculated from the other 10 characters – a typing error is detected immediately.
Size-type codes: 22G1 = 20' general purpose, 42G1 = 40' GP, 45G1 = 40' high cube.

Container numbers are validated against the ISO 6346 check digit in the PKL editor and the container packing report shows the size-type code.
