ISO 5817 Welding – Fusion-welded joints in steel – Quality levels for imperfections

Defines three quality levels – B (stringent), C (intermediate) and D (moderate) – with limits for each type of weld imperfection such as cracks, porosity, undercut and misalignment.

CodeISO 5817Issued byISOFieldWeld acceptance

What it covers

  • Limits for surface and internal imperfections of arc-welded joints in steel.
  • Applies to butt and fillet welds over a range of thicknesses.

Key points for fabricators

  • EN 1090-2 links the required quality level to the execution class (typically C for EXC2 and B for EXC3, with additional requirements).
  • Inspectors record the imperfection type and the level it was judged against.

How PEB Studio supports it

Inspection steps can name ISO 5817 as the acceptance standard; a FAIL records the defect (porosity, undercut, dimensional deviation…) and its disposition, and re-inspections are kept as #2, #3…

This page is a summary for orientation. Always work from the edition of the standard named in the project specification.
